Towns
The Hanseatic towns of Rostock and Wismar as well as the regional capital of Schwerin have numerous sights as well as a north German charm that always make them worth visiting.
Bad Doberan
Bad Doberan, also known as the "pearl of north German Gothic brick architecture", is only about 5 km away from Heiligendamm. Besides its small and cosy town centre and a handful of shops that invite visitors to stroll about, the small nearby town of Bad Doberan has numerous attractions:
- The Minster of Bad Doberan is part of the Cistercian cloisters and is regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings of Gothic brick architecture in northern Germany.
- The historic train "Molli" was built in 1886 to connect Bad Doberan with Kühlungsborn via Heiligendamm. This narrow-gauge railway is still a popular means of transport for many tourists today.
- The "Ostsee Rennbahn" is the oldest horse race track in Germany. Since its construction in 1823, the various races held at Doberan race track throughout the year have attracted hundreds of onlookers and horse lovers.
The Hanseatic Town of Rostock
Rostock is approx. 16 km away from Heiligendamm and is just a 20-minute drive away along the B103 road. The largest city of Mecklenburg, its numerous stores and a beautiful old town centre invite visitors to walk through the streets and linger a while. Daily ferry excursions to Denmark and the south of Sweden are highly recommended.
Warnemünde
The seaside resort of Warnemünde is about 14 km away from Heiligendamm and can be easily reached by car within 15 minutes. The numerous idyllic fishing cottages along the Alter Strom (an old canal), the little cosy restaurants and the long sandy beach make Warnemünde one of the most popular destinations in the region.
The Hanseatic Town of Wismar
Wismar is about 50 km away from Heiligendamm and is one of the most beautiful seaport towns in Mecklenburg. One can reach Wismar within 40 minutes by following highway A20 to Lübeck. Wismar, the most authentically preserved Hanseatic town on the southern Baltic, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.
The Regional Capital of Schwerin
Schwerin is situated between seven lakes and is about 70 km and a 60-minute drive away from Heiligendamm. The oldest city in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania was the governmental seat of the dukes of Mecklenburg for centuries and is nowadays the smallest regional capital in Germany. The seat of the state parliament, Schwerin Palace, located on an island, is a 'must-see'.
